Mia’s Fairy Theme Party Preparations

My Little Fairy

I posted photos of my granddaughter Mia’s first birthday party that had a fairy theme.

She was in a daycare center at that time and I copied the post that I did on her blog in March 2007. You can read the original post if you are interested by clicking on the above link. There is also a link for the cake and biscuits recipes.

I did not realise when I offered to take care of the party preparations, that it would take me nearly four days to finish everything. 20 children ranging in ages of 1 year to 6 year times 2 snacks for every child times 4-5 different snacks come down to a lot of snacks. Add 20 star shaped meringues carefully attached to “magic wands” decorated with lots and lots of florist ribbons plus boxes for a small packet of sweets, popcorn and juice as well as a picture to colour in, and you find yourself with one very tired grandmother. Oh, and do not forget the birthday cake!

Many years ago I could do these things with my eyes closed, but it took me nearly three hours to decorate this cake. However, when I saw the joy and delight on Mia’s face, I knew it was all worth it.

I did not want to just hand out sweets and cold drinks, so I baked butterflies and round biscuits from my favourite cookie dough. The biscuits was decorated with marshmallows cut into petal shapes with scissors and arranged on top of the biscuits to look like flowers. I used butter frosting coloured with food coloring and decorated with thousand and ones and silver balls.

I made bread snails by cutting off the edges of slices of white bread, flattened it with a cake roller, spread it with butter and cheese spread and rolled it tightly around a vienna sausage. The bread roll was cut into 4 pieces and one side of each roll was topped with half a glacé cherry. Small dots of frosting was piped onto the cherries to form the eyes. I made sandwiches with cold meat slices and used a star shaped cookie cutter to cut out small sandwiches. Cottage cheese was coloured with a drop of food colouring, topped with coloured chocolate vermicelli and a tiny star shaped piece of cheese.

I used an image from a card program to make the covers for the party favour boxes. I selected Mia’s face from another photograph and inserted it in the image and as you can see from this image, she made a sweet fairy.

In a few days I will post the photos from her 2nd birthday party where the theme was “Finding Nemo”
