In some Christian countries including the United Kingdom it is tradition to cook pancakes (crepes) the day before lent starts.

This is because traditionally people would not eat sweet food for the next 40 days and 40 nights so to stop it from going to waste they would fill pancakes with it and enjoy it all that night.

Making pancakes is a really easy cooking activity that kids love to get involved with, it doesn’t involve to much fancy cookware and if your child has a birthday around that time of year, or you’re just looking for an excuse to have a party why not throw a pancake party.

If you decide to do this you will need to prepare enough batter in advance, a pint of batter will make about 15 pancakes depending how big and thick you make them.

The recipe:
The Pancakes (for 1 pint of batter)

4 eggs

1 pint of milk

8* oz flour

(*note: if you prefer thicker pancakes you can increase the amount of flour slightly. Thicker pancakes are also a little easier for children to cook as they are less likely to fall apart)

Mix all the ingredients together and then leave to sit for 20 minutes.

Use an oil soaked cloth to finely coat a frying pan, and then heat the pan until the oil smokes.

Pour enough batter for one pancake into the frying pan and move the frying pan in a circular motion to spread the batter evenly.

If the pan is hot enough the bottom of the pancake should cook almost instantly, allowing you to flip the pancake. (You can either do this the fancy way, or if you’re feeling less brave flip it with a spatula.)

Once the pancake is flipped reduce the heat and slowly cook the other side of the pancake until it is cooked through.

The fillings:

This is really up to you, everyone has their own preference. The most traditional pancakes have lemon and sugar; you could also try filling them with stewed fruit.

At a children’s party the easiest option would be to have a selection of flavoured sauces normally used for ice cream and jam. You can also find some more fancy filling recipes here.

Making it a party:

Use your best judgement in how much you let the children do based on their age and how much you trust them.

For young children you might like to make the pancakes all in advance and then just let them choose their own toppings. Slightly older children might like to try flipping their own pancakes, and older children still can be involved in the whole process.

Having at least two adults supervising this party is advisable, one to supervise the children and the other to supervise any cooking. This also allows you to have the children cooking in smaller groups which are safer.

Enjoy pancake making, even if you’re not having a party, it can be a great fun thing to do with your family.

Organizing a child’s birthday party can be a stressful task; however, once you know what the theme of the party is going to be, it can be easier to arrange.

Children that love playing sports are likely to want a birthday party that relates to the activities they enjoy.

If your child loves hockey, there are a few things you can do to plan an exciting hockey themed birthday party.

For any party, you need to invite your guests one way or another.

If you’re going to send out paper invitations, you could send hockey themed invitations to prompt the guests to guess what type of party it’s going to be.

If your child has many friends who also enjoy playing hockey, this could be the perfect idea to encourage as many people as possible to turn up to the birthday party.

Decorate your house with pictures of hockey players, teams and anything else hockey-related that your child likes. They’re likely to have a favorite team – if this is the case, buy some posters or print some pictures of the different players to stick on the walls or use for other purposes.

Air hockey tables are the center of attention at a hockey themed parties.

If you don’t already own an air hockey table, you could rent one or borrow one from a friend.

Fans of hockey will find this extremely exciting, and the guests will spend all night competing against one another on the air hockey table.

Finally, put together some hockey party bags to give the guests before they leave.

Try to get some small hockey player figures or games related to hockey and put them inside the bags. You can also include traditional things such as birthday cake, stickers and bubbles.

Create a winter wonderland for your child’s next birthday party with this “snow-filled” party theme.

Set the scene with white and green colours; white tablecloth decorated with green felt trees, a gingerbread “village” with lots of white frosting , white party food, fluffy pompom snowmen, green paper pine trees, paper snowmen and snowflakes to decorate the walls and ceiling.

Keep the party guests busy with activities that can double up as party favours and carry the colour scheme through to more party favours that can be used long after the party is over.

Deliver the party invitations on the “arms” of pompom snowmen and let the party guests use these as their entrance tickets to the party.

Snowman Invitation:

You will need:

Thick card

Scissors

thick white wool

Graft glue

Black and orange felt

Twigs

To make the invitations:

Using the photo as a guideline, make the snowmen by following this method to make pompoms, but make the snowmen bigger than the one on the photo by using two circle templates with an outer diameter of 9cm (for the body), and two circle templates with an outer diameter of 4cm (for the head). The inner circle for both the templates can be approximately 2.5cm. That will give you quite nice, fluffly pompoms.

After tying the two pompoms together, (see how to do it here), you can make a face on the small pompom by gluing on tiny circles of black felt for the eyes and an orange triangle for the carrot nose. (I twisted a small piece of orange tissue paper for “my” snowman’s nose).

Make a hat from a 4cm circle of black felt and glue it to the snowman’s head. Cut a 2cm x 6cm strip of black felt, wrap it around your finger to make a tube and glue the end to secure it. Glue the tube to the base of the hat. Cut another 1,5cm circle and glue it to the top of the hat. Leave to dry.

Tip: I used the lid of a 2 liter plastic bottle for my snowman’s hat. Much easier and quicker than forming a tube and trying to fit the smaller circle to the felt tube.

Glue two twigs to the big pompom to make arms. Glue the written invitation to one arm.

Use green card to make an origami box to hold the snowman, tie a silver ribbon around the box and let your birthday child deliver the invitation by hand.

My granddaughter will celebrate her 5th birthday tomorrow, the 6th of March AND there will be NO PARTY this year!

Or maybe there will be no party for me as the grandmother because this year she will be celebrating her birthday with her mother and father as well as her cousin and his parents whom she met for the first time 18 months ago.

They will be spending some time tomorrow at the zoo in Bloemfontein, about 100 km from our home town. The zoo is really one of her favourite places to visit and I think she will not even miss the fact that she will not have a “normal” birthday party this year.

This small girl (not so small anymore) is not afraid of wild animals, in fact, she loves to look at them, touch them (if allowed to do so) and listen to her dad explaining about their habits. Here are two photos of her feeding the only elephant in the Bloemfontein Zoo (she was about three years old) and touching a young lion (December 2010)

So what better way than to plan a party with a zoo theme this year if her dad could not get time off from his contract job a few hundred kilos from home. Luckily he managed to be free this weekend so there was a change in the party plans, leaving grandma to be ready with an animal cake when they return home from their weekend visit to the zoo.

The original plan was to take her to the zoo with her cousin and on arrival, the two of them would receive a special “zoo entrance ticket”, (organised before time by an adult), pack a picnic basket with “zoo animal” cupcakes, “animal” food like trail mix, animal cookies and provide animal masks, binoculars made from empty toilet rolls and maybe when the two young ones were tired of looking at the animals, some zoo animal colouring pages to keep them busy while the adults relaxed.

The only thing I managed to do before they left for the zoo today, was to quickly design the “entrance tickets” with the help of a ticket template and tutorial from one of my favourite scrapbook artists, Gunhild Storeide.

I downloaded the original ticket template from here, changed the colour, added some leaves, and changed the border number from the original template to my granddaughter’s date of birth, then used the link provided on Gunhilde’s site to download the font and changed the colours as well as added the “entrance” date to her birthday date this year.

The monkey and lion graphics are from a card program I have on my computer.

So for the time being, all that is left to do for her birthday this year, is to decide about the shape/animal of the cake and do it before they arrive back home from the zoo.

Oh yes, and to put together a few more ideas for you to plan a fun zoo party theme for your kid’s next birthday party. As they say on TV… watch this space for more.

Click on the link to download the ticket template to design your own “zoo entrance or party invitation tickets”

Image Resources: All the animal cake images except the “full giraffe” were taken from the Children’s Birthday Cake Book that you can buy from Amazon.com

The “full giraffe” is from the “Party Magic 2“ book by Bernice van der Merwe and Arina du Plessis

I’m curious, if you were to plan a zoo themed party, what animal cake would you bake for your child? Please share your thoughts by leaving a comment right at the end of this post.

As always, have fun when you plan your child’s birthday party!

Ok, first off, I must say happy Valentine’s Day to everybody! I hope you all had a wonderful love filled day and if your child had a birthday party today I hope they enjoyed it.

Being Monday I really doubt that there were a lot of kids who had a party today except if your child is still a toddler and you invited other toddlers and the mothers saw fit to attend the party.

I was going to provide a free download of a very easy heart box template today but then I thought to myself, unless your child is of an age to appreciate the history and meaning of Valentine’s Day, I would rather let it stay over until another day.

In a way I feel that Valentine’s Day is more geared towards adults although I am aware that there are thousands of sites providing Valentine’s Crafts like cards, themes, food and snacks.

I even did it last year with a free download (you will find the link in the sidebar under free printables) that included a very small heart box template, a Valentines door hanger, heart headband and some heart images, if I remember correctly.

However, this year I decided to altogether skip the whole Valentine’s “hoolaboo” because I was thinking about all the children who have their birthdays in February.

February normally has 28 days and in a Leap Year 29 days, so it means for a whole 28/29 days there are children who celebrate their birthdays in every day, so who are we as parents or adults to decide just because one day in February is known as Valentine’s Day that our kids must have a Valentine themed birthday party?

What does your toddler of 2 or 3 years know about the meaning of Valentine’s Day? In fact, what does your child of 7 or 8 years of age really understand of Valentine’s Day?

Maybe your daughter or son of 11 or 12 would realise that there is something special about the 14th of February because everybody at school is talking about Valentine’s Day and the “mystery” of receiving a card with a few nice words and no name on it.

If you have teenagers in the house they will definitely be aware of this special day and even making plans to buy something special for their “Valentine” or making a card or a small gift.

That’s fine and part of growing up and if Mom and Dad still celebrate this day with a small gift or even celebrating the day with the whole family to show their love towards each other and the family (who says Valentine’s Day just have to be between two people?), that is even better.

BUT, what happens after the 14th of February? What theme are you going to come up with for your child tomorrow the 15th or the rest of the month of February?

A very good friend of mine from the UK suggested that fairy tale stories would be a wonderful idea for parties. In fairy tale stories there are always the good fairy who waves her magic wand and whoever are rescued by her good wishes and magic finds love and lives happily ever after. Snow White, Sleeping Beauty and Cinderella are a few examples of themes you can pursue. Don’t forget about Rapunzel! It seems this gal has got herself all tangled up with some shady characters since Disney Movies took over her life!

For boys you can still go with the favourite Superman and Batman themes. Boys (read “men”) like to conquer far away planets and damsels in distress so even a Star Wars party theme would be appropriate for the month of February.

What about an Island Explorer Party where the captain of the ship rescues a damsel stranded on an island? Or a Tarzan Party with Jane waiting to be rescued from the big, bad apes holding her captive?

Depending on the age of your child, you can turn these themes into pirate or jungle parties and still incorporate a “little love” into the theme.

Sometimes you don’t even need to think about a specific theme for your child’s birthday party! While it is so much easier to plan a party for your child if you can decide (together with your child, of course) about a theme, don’t stress about it. Ask your child what he/she would like for their party and then sit down, discuss all the options, decide about a theme and then start making lists about what you would need to make the party a success.

As always, enjoy planning your child’s birthday party!

Kids Magic Theme Parties : Guest Post by Brian McGovern

Magic and wizards have never been more popular with children thanks to their growing interest in Harry Potter and TV magicians like Criss Angel and David Blaine. Here’s how to make your child’s next birthday party a magical and fun event.

First, make sure your child is enthusiastic about the theme. Then pick a day, time, and spot for the event. Kid’s parties work best in early afternoon or just before lunchtime. Make sure your party date doesn’t conflict with a major event like a religious holiday or local game.

Next, create your invitation list. The more kids you invite, the more money you’ll need to set aside for meals, beverages, entertainment and goodie bags – and the more supervision you’ll need. Mail or email your invitations at least half a month prior to the party. The sooner you invite them, the more guests you can expect. Set the mood for the party with a magic related invitation.

Get Creative! You can save a lot of money with just a little bit of creativity. Here are some low-cost decor and activity ideas to help set the magical mood for your theme party.

Fun Food
With just a little bit of imagination you can change ordinary food into fun, party theme treats.

Delicious Magic Wands
Get some black licorice sticks and dip the ends into some melted white chocolate. You substitute dark chocolate dipped pretzel rods in place of licorice. Add some edible sparkles to create whimsical wizard’s wands that are sure to disappear like magic!

Strange Brew
A great way to serve beverages is to purchase a toy witches cauldron and create “magic
potion” by adding blue fruit punch and lighted ice cubes to the mix.

Magical Décor
Keep the party room dimly lit but don’t make it too scary for the little ones! Replace your standard light bulbs with red and yellow ones to transform your living room into a magician’s den. Cut out some yellow stars and hang them on the walls and off the ceiling at different heights. Add to the mysterious mood by playing some music like the soundtrack to Fantasia or Harry Potter.

For even more magical ambiance add some glow in the dark props and use black lights to give them an eerie light. A bubble machine can be fun but be careful not to let it make the floor slippery.

Buy some inexpensive plastic top hats and fill them with magic themed items. Include a deck of cards, a toy bunny rabbit and a magic wand and maybe a magic trick or two and you’ll have an attractive place setting and goodie bag all in one.

Activities

Transform pin the tail on the donkey into “pin the wand on the magician. Draw a simple stick-figure of a magician with a top hat on a piece of poster board and place it at the children’s shoulder level. Give each child a piece of paper cut out like a magic wand with his or her name written on it. Instead of a pointy pin, use tape.

A Harry Potter Trivia game with prizes is lots of fun if the birthday child and friends are big fans of the books and movies. For a game of skill have the kids try to toss playing cards into a magician’s top hat set on the floor across the room.

For a real magical treat, put on a magic show. If your child is a budding magician, let him or her put on a short show for the guests. Hire a professional magician to really make the day memorable. Always choose a performer who has lots of experience entertaining children and ask for references before you book you entertainment.

Brian McGovern is a magician who entertains at dozens of kid’s parties every month. To find out more about his show visit http://www.hijinx.tv.

As always, have fun when you plan your child’s magic theme party!

Looking for a different theme for a children’s party? Infuse a little Chinese culture into your event and throw a party to celebrate the Chinese New Year.

The Chinese calendar follows the lunar year and the Chinese New Year is celebrated on a new moon in late January or early February. The celebration continues for 15 days, culminating with a lantern festival on the full moon. Traditional celebrations include parties, parades and firecrackers.

Each year in the Chinese zodiac is represented by one of 12 different animals – rat, ox, tiger, rabbit, dragon, snake, horse, sheep, monkey, rooster, dog, and pig. The Chinese believe each person will have the characteristics of the animals whose sign you were born under.

For example, 2011 is the year of the rabbit, 2012 is the year of the dragon and 2013 will be the year of the snake.

Create party invitations in the shape of Chinese lanterns, dragons or Chinese lions. These are all symbols associated with this holiday. On the invitation, suggest guests wear red since it is considered a lucky color.

Decorations for the Chinese New Year include vases of flowers and plates of tangerines and oranges. Messages of good fortune are written on red paper and are hung on the walls during the New Year’s celebration including sayings like “May you have good health” or “May the stars of good fortune and happiness shine upon you.” For more party decorations, add Chinese paper lanterns and pictures of Chinese dragons. “Gung Hay Fat Choy” is the traditional Chinese greeting for this holiday, so greet guests with this saying when they arrive for the party.

Great craft activities for a Chinese New Year party include making dragon masks and paper lanterns. To make dragon masks, use paper plates, markers and construction paper to create dragon faces. Use a loop of construction paper on the back of the plate to make a handle so you can hold up the mask. Print out some pictures of Chinese dragons to give everyone ideas for decorating their own. Crepe paper streamers can be attached to the mask as the dragon’s body and to flow behind it in the parade.

To make a paper lantern, use brightly colored pieces of rectangular paper. Fold each piece of paper in half, lengthwise. Starting at least ½” from the end of the paper, make several cuts into the folded side of the paper, ending the cuts before the edge. Unfold the paper and use tape to secure the two short edges of the paper to one another. Attach a piece of string or yarn across the top of the lantern to make a handle.

Image Resource: http://phillipmartin.info

Once everyone has a dragon mask, have a dragon parade. March around the house with the dragons and use party poppers to simulate the fireworks of a traditional Chinese parade. Another fun activity is to provide a chart of the Chinese zodiac so guests can figure out the animal associated with their birth years.

While some Chinese fare may be too adventurous for children, most kids will eat Chinese appetizers such as egg rolls, wontons and paper-wrapped chicken. Accompany these with rice, fried rice and orange slices for a fun and tasty meal. You can also serve the rice in Chinese Take Out boxes – just search for templates on the internet.

Of course, fortune cookies are the perfect end to a New Year’s feast. Making homemade fortune cookies is another fun activity that older children will find intriguing. Recipes and instructions for the cookies are readily available on many web sites.

It is traditional to give children money on the Chinese New Year, so consider a red envelope with even a few coins to send home with each guest. Other fun favor ideas include chopsticks, books with Chinese stories or zodiac animal figurines.

Have fun with these ideas for a Chinese New Year’s Party for your child

Every other kid on the block will have the same party – same paper plates, same streamers, maybe even the same games.

Choose one of these one-of-a-kind parties, and your child will have a unique and unforgettable party. And because of the timelessness of these ideas, you may even be able to recycle your efforts on a younger sibling’s party.

Jungle Party: Decorate the room with green streamers and lots of houseplants. As the children arrive, direct them to a table stocked with white paper plates, construction paper, scissors, glue, pipe cleaners, and any other craft items you think the children would like.

Instruct them to make a mask of a jungle animal: tiger, elephant, monkey, lion, toucan, gorilla, etc. When they’ve finished their masks, attach elastic with a stapler and let them wear them.

Play a charades game in which the children act like different animals. For younger children, allow them to act out the animals that correspond with their masks. Play “Pin the Tail on the Elephant.”

Decorate the cake with green frosting and plastic animals.

Tea Party: This is a favorite among little girls. Send out sophisticated-looking invitations to the children instructing them to come to the party all dressed up (preferably in their mother’s clothes) and to bring a companion (doll, teddy bear, etc.)

Your daughter will likely love the preparation involved for this party. She can make fancy place cards to put on the table and set the table with a lacy tablecloth, flowers, and pretty plates and cups.

Instead of musical chairs and pin-the-tail games, play croquet. If the birthday girl has willing siblings, dress them up like maids and butlers, and they can serve the “ladies.”

Serve dainty pastries like éclairs or ladyfingers. Of course, don’t serve the girls tea, but they’ll love fancy lemonades with their birthday cake and ice cream.

Firefighter Party: Arrange with your local fire department to bring the children to the firehouse to look at the engines and talk with a firefighter. They’ll love listening to the siren, and the firefighters may even let the climb up in the truck.

You can buy plastic red firefighter hats at party supply stores. Buy one for each child and write his or her name on it with a magic marker. They can wear their hats to the fire station and for the rest of the party.

Traditional birthday party games work well for this type of party. You can also play a variation of freeze tag in which the kids have to be sprayed with imaginary fire hoses to be “un-frozen.”

Decorate the birthday cake with fire hats and Dalmatians.

Arts-and-Crafts Party: If you have an artistic child, this may be the perfect party. Set up three or four tables with supplies for simple crafts. If you’re the type who doesn’t like to think up crafts on your own, check a book out of the library or search a kids’ site on the Internet.

The first table they go to should be equipped with brown paper bags, big enough to carry their crafts home in. They should write their names on the bags and decorate them with paints, stickers, glitter, string, crayons, and markers.

If you want this to be a real hands-on party, you could bake cupcakes instead of a big cake and allow the children to decorate their own cupcakes with frosting, candy, and sprinkles.

Water Party: Lucky is the child whose birthday falls in the summer months. On the invitations, tell the children to come in their swimsuits and bring a towel. You must have a yard equipped with a hose for this party, and you’ve got to have a back-up plan in case it rains on your child’s birthday.

Borrow or buy a “Wet Banana” or “Slip-and-Slide.” The kids can line up and run and slide down the slide. You can also play run-through-the-sprinklers games. The rainbow-type sprinklers are great for games. The children will just make the games up as they go along.

Set up a picnic table with a checkered tablecloth. If your party is scheduled for lunch or dinnertime, serve barbecued hot dogs, chips, and soda pop. Then follow the meal with cake and Popsicles.

The Instant Party is always fun to try and is so easy to do.

Get all of the party items first. After the children have arrived tell them you are going to celebrate that fact that you are all just here together. You will then split the children up into three groups.

Group one will be the interior decorators and they will be in charge of decorating for the party.

Group two will be the games group and they will be in charge of the afternoons activities. And last but not least, group three will be the treat team and they will be in charge of making sure that there are some wonderful snacks.

Give each team about 20 minutes to prepare with items that you have already bought.

When they are finished it will be time to PARTY!

Gather the kids at the end of the party and tell them how happy you are that they could all work together to make the party so much fun.

If none of these party ideas speaks to you or your child, examine your child’s interests. Does he love trains or picnics? Does she love rock climbing or dancing? You can design a party around virtually any interest, and if your child loves it his/her friends probably will do, too.

So skip the cartoon characters and plan your child’s birthday party around an activity he/she loves. It may not be the trend of the week, but it just may be the party of the year.

Today, 22 July 2010, is my son’s 32nd birthday and my thoughts turned back to the times when he was still a boy and had to eat the “creations” his mother turned up with at school or for his birthday parties.

I originally published photos of his birthday cakes when he was still a boy, on the 1st of July 2009 as “Theme Parties from Yesteryear”, but I thought I should just republish the whole post again instead of only giving a link back to the original post. I hope you will be able to find inspiration from these few photos for your boy’s next birthday party.

Here is the original post….

Here are a few photos of birthday cakes that I have made for my son when he was a kid… he will be 31 in a few weeks and I realised when I looked at the photos how quickly time goes by.

To host a party for your kids can be a lot of work but to see the wonder on their faces when you bring out the cake and other goodies is worth all the time spend on preparing the food and putting together a theme for the party. The personal joy one experiences cannot be compared to anything else as well. So enjoy organising theme parties for your kids and make memories that will last a life time.

racing track cake for boys

racing track party food

I used a racing track theme for his 3rd birthday party at the day care centre that he attended at that stage. Click on the photos to open in a new window and get some ideas on how to use store bought cookies, sweets and vienna sausages to make racing cars and “spectators”.

Kids Alien Space Ship Birthday Theme Party

On his 6th birthday I tried a space ship theme but the cake eventually turned into an alien monster kind of space ship but the kids were very impressed with it. Store bought wafers and ice cream cones turned into smaller space ships and boudoir finger biscuits became small planes.

Alien Spaceship Cake

alien spaceship party food

Train cake

I tried to make a train cake for his 4th birthday but now that I look at the photo again, it is actually a far cry from a train, still it was a lot of fun to make the cake.

Train cake for a boy

The radio cake for his 8th birthday looked more realistic and suited his passion for certain songs on the radio at that stage.

radio cake for a kid's party

If you have read my post on where to find ideas for theme parties, I hope these few photos will help you realise that it is really not difficult to come up with a kids-theme-party idea.

Remember to have fun planning your kid’s next theme party!

July 2010 is definitely one of them.

It started with my mother’s 80th birthday and Independence Day in America, then there were 3 other family members who celebrated their birthdays between the 4th and the 9th of July.

On Sunday night, 11th July, Spain won the 2010 FIFA World Cup and I bet they had the mother of all parties afterwards. Congratulations on a job well done!

On the 14th of July France will celebrate Bastille Day.

Former South African president, Nelson Mandela, who also made an appearance at the soccer game on Sunday night, will celebrate his 92nd birthday on the 18th of July. What a great age and indeed worth a celebration!

On the 22nd July my son will have his birthday and of course all over the world people will celebrate their own families’ birthdays during July.

Another event that will take place in South Africa is the release of the new Shrek For Ever After movie on the 16th of July (even though it has already been released in the USA on the 21st of May 2010). Yes, the lovable green ogre is back in our midst and a lot of moms will have to find ideas for Shrek-themed parties again.

According to the movies.yahoo.com site “This is the end of the line for the Shrek films, so it’s the last time to enjoy the company of the big green guy” but definitely not the end of children asking for a Shrek party. According to statistics on this site, over 50 fairy tale characters have appeared in at least one if not all of the first three movies. Shrek will definitely go down in history as one of the favourite fairy tales in the world and kids will ask for Shrek parties for many, many more years to come.

Luckily you won’t have to travel Far Far Away to find free downloads like invitation cards, masks, doorhangers and even a lovely snack idea. So, it would be quite “ridonkeylous” not to visit this Shrek for Ever After site and afterward not to have fun when you plan a Shrek Theme Party for your child’s next birthday.
