How Can I use Marie Biscuits for a Child's Birthday Party

Marie Biscuits are often considered as a biscuit with no taste whatsoever when eaten on it’s own. However, this humble biscuit are totally suited to use for a child’s birthday party. I’m not sure, or no, actually I am sure that many kids will eat it as it is when you pile some on a plate and put it amongst the other party snacks.

Marie Biscuits are also the perfect “blank canvas” to turn out heaps of party snacks that can fit in with basically any party theme.

One of the most popular snacks you can make with Marie biscuits is the “Marie Biscuit Marshmallow Sandwich“  that I  made for my granddaughter’s 4th birthday party.

To make the Marie Biscuit Marshallow Sandwiches you just need a packet or two of Marie Biscuits, marshmallows and a microwave oven. Place a marshmallow on a biscuit, pop into the microwave for about 5 – 15 seconds on high and watch how the marshmallow puffs up to double it’s size.

You can take this method/idea one step further and insert a lollipop stick in the melted marshmallow before putting the second Marie biscuit on top of the marshmallow.

You can then decorate the top Marie Biscuit by piping some icing in circles on it and sprinkling 100′s and 1000′s on the icing before it hardens.

Sandwich biscuits together with caramel treat or just cover each biscuit with icing or melted chocolate, then create funny faces, clocks, bugs or flowers by using store bought candies like jelly beans, mini allsorts, sour worms and snakes, other assorted jubes, licorice strips and Smarties. Pretty flowers can be made from mini marshmallow petals, dipped into thousand and ones or jelly powder.

To make icing: Make a fairly stiff icing by sifting 250ml (1 cup) icing sugar into a bowl and add about 15 ml (1 tablespoon) boiling water. (If mixture is too runny, just add more icing sugar;  if too stiff, add a few drops boiling water.)  Stir until smooth. Divide into small bowls and add colouring and/or essence as desired. Spread icing  onto biscuits and decorate as desired.

Marie Biscuits can also be used for wheels or as a base/lid for ice cream cone wafers. Take a look at the cakes in the birthday cakes for boys post. The wheels of the train and the big dial on the radio cake were made from Marie Biscuits. The windmills and space ships were made from ice cream cone wafers with Marie Biscuit bases.

Tip: Don’t prepare all these fun Marie Biscuit treats by yourself. Let the party guests decorate their own biscuits as a party activity.

You can of course make many other kinds of snacks with Marie Biscuits. Here are two of my favourite recipes.

1. Marie Biscuit and Date Snacks:

Ingredients:

1 x 200g packet marie biscuits
185g brick margarine
125ml (½ cup) white sugar
250g dates, chopped
Coconut for sprinkling

To make

1.  Place the biscuits in a plastic bag. Break them into smaller, but not too fine, pieces using a rolling pin. Place in a bowl.
2.  Combine the margarine, sugar and chopped dates in a saucepan and heat until margarine has melted.
3.  Pour the melted mixture onto the broken biscuits and mix well.
4.  Spoon the mixture into a Swiss roll tin (roughly 25cm x 15cm) and press down firmly.
5.  Leave to set. Sprinkle coconut over and cut into squares or bars.

Makes about 24.

Note: You can also roll this mixture into small balls before rolling in coconut. Place on wax paper to set.

2. Marie Biscuit Chocolate Fudge:

Ingredients:

1 packet (200g) Marie Biscuits (follow directions as above to lightly crush the biscuits)
250g margarine or butter
500g icing sugar (1 packet)
75ml cocoa powder
1 extra large egg

Method:

1.  Melt the butter/margarine in a large pot on the stove over low heat.
2.  Sift cocoa powder and icing sugar in another bowl to remove any lumps.
3.  Add the icing sugar and cocoa mixture to the melted butter and stir until smooth.
4.  Add the egg to the warm mixture and stir until everything is mixed thoroughly.(You have to be really quick in  stirring to  prevent  the egg from curdling.)
5.  Remove mixture from heat, add the crushed Marie Biscuits and mix well.
6.  Pour the mixture into a prepared  cake tin or glass dish and press down evenly with a spoon.
7.  Place in fridge until just set, remove and cut into squares. Return to fridge and leave to set completely.

Store in airtight container.

You can also add other ingredients like chopped nuts, chopped glacé cherries and other dried fruit of choice to the original mixture.

Have fun with Marie Biscuits for your child’s next birthday party.
