The birthday cake can be in the form of a castle or ring the changes with a faux tower cake. Use a large cereal box or any other sturdy cardboard to shape a round tower. Cut out battlements and a window with a craft knife. Staple or glue the sides together. Cover with foil. Use the template of the candy holder as an example.
Use marzipan to make Rapunzel and position her inside the window. Use frosting to cover the whole tower with biscuits and candy until the desired effect is achieved.
Alternatively you can look at images of castles – with empty shoe boxes and empty cardboard rolls you can build a whole faux castle cake. Why don’t you try your hand at a faux cake similar to the Rapunzel Tower in Clarens ?
The party food can consist of lots of different shaped sandwiches filled with coloured and flavoured butters, small cocktail sausages or polony and egg pies with herbs.
Use cookie cutters or cardboard templates to cut out shapes like flowers and towers.
Make bread cylinders or miniature swiss-rolls – cut off the edges of slices of white bread, flatten slightly with a cake roller, spread coloured butter on the bread slices, being careful to cover the edges. Roll the bread into cylinders, cover each cylinder with cling wrap and refrigerate at least 15 minutes. Slice into one-inch-thick discs, cover, and refrigerate until serving time.
Idea: Spread a few slices with smooth apricot jam or mixed fruit, strawberry jam or even lemon curd for the party guests who like sweet fillings on their sandwiches.
For rainbow sandwiches you can spread a slice of white bread with yellow butter, then add a slice of brown bread on top, spread with green butter, another slice of white bread spread with red or brown butter. Cut into triangles.
Place the sandwiches and other snacks on a bed of crisp green lettuce leaves, decorate with fresh parsley, slice fresh carrots in rounds and using a small flower-shaped pastry cutter, cut out small flowers to add to the platters.
