I’m sure we are all familiar with those ads on TV showing the latest gadget for kids to blow huge bubbles or thousands of bubbles and sometimes they come with a hefty price tag, too.

My granddaughter also had one or two of these “bubble-makers”, but since we could not manage to find another bottle of the special bubble solution, she soon lost interest playing with them.

However, she is crazy about her newest bubble toy. Outside, in the bath, in the kitchen at the sink, she loves to play with it and to see how many bubbles she can blow.

And this one cost practically next to nothing! All you need is an empty plastic bottle, an old face cloth, some bubble or dish soap and a rubber band. After you have put it together, you just dampen the cloth a little, dip it into the soap and let the kids blow into the top of the bottle.

When I saw this idea on Betz White’s blog, I knew I had to make one for my granddaughter and it was worth it to do it. Betz calls this the Foam-erator – a nice descriptive word for such a great idea.

Betz kindly pointed out that I made a mistake in telling you to use dishwasher soap. It should be normal dish soap for hand washing. I have since corrected this. Thanks Betz, for spotting this mistake.

I can also just add that your children should not use shampoo for the bubbles. My granddaughter used some of her mother’s shampoo the other night while she was playing in the bath with the bubble toy and needless to say, the shampoo burned her eyes quite badly.

Warning: Supervision is advised when young children are playing with the bubble toy, please make sure that they do not inhale before the next blow while the bottle is still in their mouths. It is also good practice to tell the older children to not breathe in but just blow to create the bubbles.

So, go on and make a few of these super bubble blowers for your child’s next birthday party. Not only are you recycling plastic bottles again, you are saving money as well and the kids will be in bubble heaven!

Have fun when you plan your kid’s birthday party

With a little imagination you can create rainbow bubbles of all sizes.

You will need:

5 cups warm water
1 tablespoon glycerine
5 tablespoons dishwashing liquid
a large plastic bowl and mixing spoon

To make:

Fill the bowl with 5 cups of warm water. Add the dishwashing liquid and glycerine to the water. Stir the mixture very slowly with the mixing spoon. The mixture is now ready to use. Make sure you blow them outside as the mixture may stain some of the furnishings around the house.

Ideas for bubble fun:

Collect a handful of drinking straws and tape the two ends together. Dip this in the mixture and blow through one end for a whole lot of bubbles.

Make a hoop from flexible wire and make one big bubble. Dip the hoop out of the mixture carefully otherwise it may break.
